The bond we have with our feline friends is truly special. They become more than animal companions and quickly claim their spot as furry members of our families. As with any valuable relationship in life, however, the one with our cats must be carefully established and nurtured. It starts with their arrival in our homes, either as kittens or as adopted adults. During these first months, we must teach them what to do and not to do in their new environment. We must do that in a loving, caring manner. Equally, we must make the effort to get to know our cat’s personality and preferences. A cat needs a quiet place to nap and should never be forced to play or otherwise engage with us.

Once the bond has been established, it is important that we consciously maintain it throughout the cat’s life. We need to be mindful of any changes to our work schedules, additions to the family, or other stressful shifts in our cat’s routines as they may impact the human-cat bond. If you can see such life changes on the horizon, it is always best to be proactive. Consider how they may affect your cat before the new conditions become a reality. You can take measures to ensure your cat still feels noticed and doesn’t withdraw from you. You can plan your day with your cat in mind to set aside sufficient time for play and cuddles. You can also incorporate special treats and toys in your cat’s play sessions to make the time feel extra special to your feline friend.

Like humans, adult cats can suffer from long-term trauma caused by negative experiences in kitten hood, or before they came into your care. In cats, this can manifest itself as tactile issues, such as a reluctance to be touched and bouts of aggression when petted or brushed. Building a relationship with a tactilely sensitive cat takes longer and requires more knowledge and patience.
